Well, you'll all be thrilled to know that I have recently made some changes in our school curriculum. OK, well "some" is maybe an overstatement...we've begun a new math curriculum! Now this is a pretty big deal around here, as I've been a huge fan of Math U See since we started it with Reilly when she was halfway through first grade.
And therein lies the actual issue.
Since MUS is based on mastery, she has reached 5th grade and there are math concepts that she has never laid eyes on - like fractions and decimals and division with remainders. I struggled with this so much. I realize that we're not planning on ever putting her in public school, so it really shouldn't matter the order in which she learns the concepts, just that she learns them at some time, right? And she would have...eventually. Then I started to worry that Declan, who was in the second book, wasn't acually understanding the concepts, and I decided that it was time for a change.
So I bought a program called Teaching Textbooks, which is mostly done on the computer. Now the kids are begging to do math every day! I had to go back to 4th grade with Reilly, but I think she'll catch up in no !time

It is something that I do all the time...question myself about what I am providing for the kids. To compensate, I have them on the hardest/most thourough math that I could find, Saxon, and the most detailed english, Abeka. I'm not always sure this is good as those two subjects tend to suck up so much of our school time lately. I just think that no matter what we do, we will always question ourselves. I know that you will do and have always done what is best for your kids!!
