WFMW: Saving Thirty Bucks!!

Well, I've never actually done this before, although my friend Heather over at The Duklings does it every Wednesday. It originates at We Are THAT Family, I think...I don't know. Wait, I just realized that it must originate there because the web address on the banner matches. So, yeah, it started there.
Amazing how my posts often end up as a meandering string of consciousness, huh?
So, my "thing" that works for me is saving money! See, our cat, Supey, had been using the same litter box since he was a kitten. I began to think that maybe, just maybe, we should get a new one, seeing as how it's just plastic and has probably soaked up several years of...well, I'll just stop there. Suffice to say, I thought it was time for a fresh toilet for Supercat.

I headed off to Petsmart and found one that seemed to fit the bill. Nice and big, for our...umm...hefty kitty, and with the extra added bonus of having the entrance in the top. This is a bonus because we have a small dog who, unfortunately, has very few qualms about  going spelunking in the cat box. Yes, that is gross. This is the reason that I pretty much don't let any dog lick me on the face. Because, EW, you know the places that they put that tongue! *gag* The only problem was that The Perfect New Poop Place carried a hefty price tag: $34.99. Yikes! Thirty five bucks for a cat toilet!
But, as I took a closer look at the Clevercat Top Entry Litterbox I realized that all it really was was a Rubbermaid tub with a hole cut in the top. Yes, there are little litter-catching grooves on the top, and the edge is nice and smooth, but other than that, it's just a $35 Rubbermaid box. So, I decided that I would make my OWN Clevercat box! One $5 box and a bread knife later, and VIOLA! My own top entry litter box! (The bread knife came into play for cutting the hole in the lid.) AWESOME! It really does work well, and I'm very glad that I didn't shell out the $35 for "the real thing".
(Wow. I can't believe I just wrote a whole post about a litterbox.)
OH! I almost forgot to say, if you want to find out things that work for OTHER people, things that are probably far more interesting than this was, go to and look HERE!

Ooooo! Super job! And Supey likes it okay? I might do this for Lou! Patches sneaks up to Thaniel's room for her daily dose of Tootsie Rolls. Ew!

Oh, it works wonderfully! I left the lid off for the first few days, just to get him used to it, but now he has no problem hopping in through the hole.

I was thinking how much I'd like it if my chihuahua, Shadow, would spelunk in the kitty box--until I remembered that spelunk doesn't mean 'poop.' Oh, well.
It's amazing to me what you could spend on pets. Have you ever seen that self-scooping litter box? The price on that baby is ridiculous.
I hope you used the money you saved to treat yourself to something nice, for being so smart!(And a bag of treats for the kitties?)

That's pretty neat. Good for you for just making it yourself!

I've seen those boxes and think they are pretty neat. Good job making your own!

Speaking of litter, I just tried a new one. World's Best Cat litter. Have you tried this one? It's kind of expensive, but it really works well. It's corn based, which is nice. The clay stuff is always so dusty and musty smelling.
